Bhojan fell in love at first sight but found it hard to understand Mira's utter devotion to Ginidhara. Mira suffered imprisonment in a haunted palace and then exile for her beliefs. Even her friends were persecuted because of her uncompromising love for Lord Krishna. Eventually Bhojan came to understand his wife's piety. The story is told in the form of a musical play where the love story is interwoven with delightful songs and dances. The character of Mira is one to win the hearts of all who read of her. Her gentle devotion and steadfast belief are an inspiration to everyone. The ancient Indian critics dignified the essence of poetry as Rasa and by that word they meant a concentrated taste, a spiritual essence of emotion, an essential aesthetic, the soul's pleasure in the pure and perfect sources of feeling. The essential and decisive step of the future art of poetry will perhaps be to discover that it is not the form which either fixes or reveals the spirit, but the spirit which makes out of itself the form and the word. The spirit creates perfectly because it creates directly out of self and is spontaneously, supra-intellectually all-conscious.A spiritual change must equally come over the intention and form of the drama when the age has determined its tendencies. The drama of the future will differ from the romantic play and tragedy because the thing, that which dramatic speech will represent, will be something more internal than the life-soul and its brilliant pageant of passion and character. The external web of events and action, whether sparing or abundant, strongly marked or slight in incidence, will only be outward threads and indices and the movement that will throughout occupy the mind will be the procession of the soul phases or the turns of soul action. The personage of the play will be the spirit in man diversified or multitudinous in many human beings, whose inner spiritual, much more than external, life relations will determine the development, and the culminations will be steps of solution of those spiritual problems of our existence which after all are the root of and include and inform all the others. It will not be limited either by any old or new convention, but transmute the old moulds and invent others and arrange according to the truth of its vision, its acts and the evolution of its dramatic process or the refrain of its lyrical or the march of its epic motive. PrefaceAt the request of my friend Swami Shuddhananda Bharati I am delighted to write a short preface to this little work. I had the privilege of seeing it previously in its shortened form and was then greatly struck with the way in which he had worked out the ethical principles of India for modern life.By adopting the Kural metre he has inevitably challenged comparison with the greatest work of Tamil literature. This was a very bold thing to do, and while it is only natural that his verses should suiffer as a result of this comparison, yet it must be said that they are written in simple and chaste Tamil. Swamiji's book is meant not for the elect, but for the common people, and so he has not followed his great predecessor in wrapping up his thought in such concise language that it requires considerable practice to understand it. Most of our author's stanzas are so simple that one with ans education at all can understand them.Like the author of the Kural he has dealt with practical life and its needs, and he has done so from the point of view of today rather than that of yesterday.The book will there-fore be found of real value from the ethical point of view. The modem conceptions of social service and national life fend their places in it. He takes up such subjects as disease, manual labour as well as the regular subjects of other. ethical preachers.The author daims that it is a new gospel which came to him during, a special time of meditation when he sat silent communing with himself and God tor three months.We venture to think that in the development of Indian ethical thought this book will occupy a distinct place. Adi Shankara Bhagavan, préfaceShuddhananda Bharati a rédigé une biographie d'Adi Sankara Bhagavan, qui comprend tous les détails de sa première vie et des pulsions maternelles et spirituelles qui ont agi sur le grand Acharya, et qui explique son érudition quasi omnisciente dans pratiquement tous les aspects de la littérature sacrée et profane existant à son époque. Le livre contient un compte rendu attentif et affectueux du séjour de Sankara dans les lieux saints de l'Inde et des incidents qui ont caractérisé ses voyages, comme sa rencontre avec le grammairien insensé qui a conduit à la composition du Bhaja Govindam, son dialogue avec Siva sous la forme d'un Chandala après lequel il a écrit le Manisha Panchakam, son contact avec Padma Pada et avec les autres qui sont devenus ses disciples choisis. L'auteur donne une description émouvante de l'épisode du Mahishmati qui a conduit à la dispute avec Mandana Misra et la grande Bharati, l'épouse de Mandana Misra, qui a finalement abouti à l'émergence de Mandana Misra comme successeur et commentateur de Sankara sous son nom ultérieur de Sureswaracharya. Comme l'auteur l'observe à juste titre, les contributions apportées par Bharati (en tant que phare) à l'évolution de la personnalité de Sankara ne peuvent pas être surestimées et, comme il le dit avec justesse, le terme Bharati fait partie des titres portés par Sankaracharya et est vraiment un hommage à l'oeuvre de la grande femme sainte et savante.Les cérémonies funèbres de sa mère, réalisées avec audace et sans convention par Sankara, sa rencontre avec Hastamalakar et Thotakacharya et la fondation du Sringeri Pitha sont relatées avec une grande minutie et le récit de Sankara Vijaya regorge d'informations sur les lieux saints visités et inspirés par Sankara, notamment Rameswaram, Kanyakumari, Chidambaram et Kancheepuram au sud et Puri, Nasik, Ujjain, Dwarka et Jyothir Mutt au nord.Ce livre n'est pas seulement une biographie, mais aussi un répertoire de nombreux dictons et hymnes mémorables de Sankaracharya, présentés à la fois dans l'original sanskrit et dans sa traduction tamoule.
