Née à Wellington (Nouvelle-Zélande), le 14 octobre 1888, morte à Fontainebleau le 9 janvier 1923, Katherine Mansfield (pseudo de Kathleen Beauchamp-Murry) a illuminé la littérature britannique du début du XXe siècle. Elle publia ses premières nouvelles en 1909, mais c'est avec Pension allemande en 1911 qu'elle connut le succès, manifestant une personnalité complexe et un style original qui trahit toutefois l'influence de Tchekov. Ses recueils suivants, Félicité (1920), La Garden-Party et La Maison de poupée (1922), Le Nid de colombes (1923), l'imposèrent comme un des grands écrivains de l'époque. Ses Lettres et son Journal, publiés après sa mort, révèlent un être où la femme vivant chaque instant avec intensité le dispute à l'écrivain passionnément attachée à la recherche esthétique.
